Say Goodbye to Leaks: Tips and Tricks for Fixing Common Cloth Nappy Problems

Cloth nappies are a great alternative to disposable diapers, but leaks can sometimes be an issue. This can be frustrating, especially if you are new to reusable nappies. Fortunately, there are a few simple steps you can take to prevent leaks and keep your baby dry and comfortable. In this blog, we will look at some common causes of leaks in cloth nappies and provide tips and tricks for fixing them.

  1. Incorrect fit: One of the most common causes of leaks in cloth nappies is poor fit. When we see leaks caused by fit, the rise poppers are the most common culprit. The nappy should fit snugly around your baby's legs, and be tucked into the knicker line to prevent leaks. You should be able to fit 1 finger in between the leg and elastic, and 2 fingers in the tummy gap. Check the fit of your nappy regularly and adjust as your baby grows.

  2. Not changing nappies frequently enough: Your baby should have their nappy changed every two to three hours to prevent leaks. Keep an eye on your baby's nappy and change it as soon as you notice it is wet or dirty.

  3. Using the wrong size or type of absorbent insert: Using the wrong size or type of absorbent insert can cause leaks. Check the material composition of the inserts and make sure you have placed the most quickly absorbing material closest to your baby. As babies turn into toddlers, they can start to 'flood' their nappies. This happens when a toddler starts learning to hold their wee for short amounts of time, releasing a large volume at once. To combat this, use cotton or microfibre to absorb quickly. Remember that microfibre can be prone to compression leaks so pair it with a higher capacity insert, like a hemp booster or bamboo

  4. Improper washing and drying: Not washing and drying correctly can reduce the absorbency of your cloth nappies and cause leaks. Make sure you are following the manufacturer's instructions for washing and drying your nappies. You can find our washing instructions here. Never use fabric softeners!

Leaks in cloth nappies can be frustrating, but they can often be prevented or fixed with a few simple adjustments. Make sure your nappies fit properly, use the correct size and type of absorbent insert, change your baby's nappy frequently, and follow the manufacturer's instructions for washing and drying. With a little patience and some trial and error, you can say goodbye to leaks and enjoy the benefits of cloth diapering.
