When you find out you are having a baby, you will have so many decisions to make. Where will they sleep? How will you feed them? Which pushchair should you buy? One decision that many new parents haven't considered is which type of nappies to use. Disposable nappies have become the standard in today's society and the majority of people have never even considered that there may be an alternative.
Disposable nappies were only invented in 1947, less than 100 years ago! Before this, every baby wore cloth nappies. Although cloth nappies have also evolved since the '40s. Now, they are quick and easy to use, often with no folding or pinning. Washing machines have also come along way and can cope with cloth nappies extremely well.
So, why should you use cloth nappies with your baby?
Because they are cheaper
A baby will have had between 4,000-6,000 nappy changes by the time they are potty trained. In 2021, the government's money advice service estimated that the average overall cost of using own brand disposable nappies was £1875 over two and a half years, compared to around £400 for cloth nappies, including washing! This is an enormous saving of £1475. Also consider whether you will have more children. Your cloth nappies are likely to last for at least 2 or 3 children, making the savings even bigger. You could also choose to sell them afterwards, and make some of that money back.
Because they are better for the planet
In the UK alone, we throw away around 3 billion nappies a year. Every nappy can take up to 500 years to degrade. That means that every single disposable nappy that has ever been used is still sitting in a landfill (or floating in the sea). The nappies your children wear are likely to still be decomposing in the year 2500. Leave the planet a better place for their children, and for generations to come.
Because they are better for your baby
Cloth nappies are more gentle on your baby's skin as they don't use any harsh dyes, chemicals or plastics. They usually use mostly natural materials, which are less likely to cause a reaction. They have also been proven to be better for your baby's hips. Cloth nappies keep a baby's hips in a wider position which is better for their joints. Despite the extra bulk, cloth nappies can also keep a baby cooler. This is because they are made of breathable, natural material instead of plastic.
